Dartmouth Learning Network announces Working Towards Skilled Trades in Manufacturing project

Dartmouth Learning Network is currently recruiting adults who are working towards or who recently achieved their GED for an 18-week program that will provide them with connections to jobs and apprenticeships in the industrial/manufacturing sector. Beginning April 12th, participants will take part in 10 weeks of paid in-class job readiness and safety training followed by an 8 week paid work placement.
"What's most exciting about this project is the priority that both the sector and the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency are placing on diversity," says Dartmouth Learning Network Executive Director, Alison O'Handley.
Not only are they accepting of individuals who don't yet have their high school diploma or GED but, they are excited to welcome women, youth, people of diverse backgrounds and visible minorities into the sector."
The project demonstrates the power of collaboration between industry, government, education and nonprofits to address socio-economic challenges. It brings together the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME) and their industry connection to source work placements for participants, the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency (NSAA) to support participant's long-term career development, the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) who will deliver much-needed safety training to participants prior to their work placements, the YMCA Nova Scotia Works (Halifax/Dartmouth sites) to provide job search training and career development support to participants, and the Dartmouth Learning Network (DLN) who will deliver the job-readiness training to participants.
Together, we are addressing long-term and Covid-related labour shortages in the manufacturing industry, while also supporting individuals most impacted by Covid-19 to re-enter the workforce in positions that allow for growth and advancement.
"The NSAA has been working with Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters and the Industrial Manufacturing Sector to establish a program for the sector based on labour market needs for some time," says Dale Crawford, Director of Partnership & Innovation with the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency.
"The partnership between the NSAA and CME has been in place; however the restraints to develop and deliver a program have been financial. This project will allow the partners to work together to provide Essential Skills and Employability Training in preparation for workplace experiences in the skilled trades in the Industrial/Manufacturing sector," says Crawford.
This project is possible through funds from the Nova Scotia government.
